The keynote speaker for the conference was Sir Peter North CBE DCL FBA QC who is one of the world’s leading road safety experts. The North Report, written by Sir Peter, led to the establishment of the National Driver Improvement Scheme in the UK. More recently, Sir Peter made recommendations to the UK Government regarding the reduction in the drink drive limit. His presentation, entitled ‘What else should we do with bad drivers?’, focused on his experience of the benefits of driver rehabilitation programmes. The conference was addressed by experts from Ireland, the UK, Sweden and Germany who are working in the area of road safety, with particular emphasis on recidivist behaviour and driver rehabilitation programmes. The presentations focused on the merit of using technical and non-technical measures as a means to address high risk behaviours such as speeding and drink driving.
