Journalism relating to Road Safety’ Award
The category ‘Journalism relating to Road Safety’ is an important award, especially with young people over represented in the statistics on road fatalities and serious injuries. The purpose of the award is to identify a piece of work executed in any medium which has contributed to road safety, and this year it was won by two very talented radio Journalists, DCU’s Barry Lenihan and Ciaran O’Connor.
Their piece was a documentary looking 'behind the statistics' of road deaths in Ireland, which profiled many road crashes and looked at the after effects. One of these interviews was with Bray man Charlie Mitchell; his brother Fran fell asleep at the wheel of his car on the Bray to Greystones Road in 2005. As part of the interviews, they also spoke with doctors and patients in the National Rehabilitation Hospital in Dun Laoghaire.
Ciaran O’ Connor has been quite successful in his student radio career, going in to the 3rd year of his Communications degree in DCU, he takes on the responsibility of managing the DCUfm radio station and we wish him the best of luck. Barry Lenihan also won the award for Radio Production of the Year (News & Current Affairs) on the night. The piece he submitted for this was a 45 minute interview with former Taoiseach Bertie Ahern and stirred up a lot of interest in the mainstream media when it was aired originally.
The RSA would like to wish both of these up and coming broadcasters every success in the future. To hear the award winning radio documentary, please click on the links below.
