Apply for a driver card

Find out how to apply for a driver card, renew an expired card, replace a lost or stolen card, or exchange an EU driver card for an Irish one. You can also track an existing application online

Exchange of non Irish EU driver cards

Tachograph cards issued in other EU member states are still valid in Ireland, but you may replace yours with an Irish tachograph card if desired.

To be eligible to apply, you must

  • Have a valid EU issued driver tachograph card
  • Have a valid driving licence

Fee

A digital tachograph card for an exchange costs €60.

OPTION 1: Apply by Post

  • printer iconFirst, download and print an application form (PDF) and fill out by hand. You can pay by cheque or postal order.
  • garda iconTake your completed application form to a GARDA STATION to have your signature and photo witnessed.
  • post iconFinally, SEND your application form, supporting documents, photo and payment to the RSA. You can pay by cheque, bank draft or postal order.
  • card iconUpon notification that your new card is available, download the data from your existing card, then take the card to the RSA's Galway office to exchange it for your new one.

OPTION 2: Apply in person

You can apply for a driver card at our public office, where your documents will be checked on the spot. You must bring your:

  • Completed application form (PDF)
  • Original driver licence
  • ID document (passport or birth certificate)
  • Passport photograph
  • EU licence holders must also bring proof of residence (a photocopy of a bank statement, utility bill or PPSN letter issued from Dept of Social Protection, no more than 3 months old, are the only residency proofs acceptable)
