Apply for a digital tachograph driver card

Find out how to apply for a driver card, renew an expired card, replace a lost or stolen card, or exchange an EU driver card for an Irish one. You can also track an existing application online.  Please note this is NOT an application for a Plastic Card Driver Licence - this is an application for a digitial tachograph card.

 

The Road Safety Authority is in the process of changing our digital tachograph card provider from 1st September, 2015. We do not expect that this will cause any delays, but, nevertheless strongly advise that you apply well in advance for your digital tachograph card if it is due for renewal in this period.

This is NOT an application for a Plastic Card Driver Licence!!

When do I need to get my digital tachograph driver card renewed?

Digital tachograph driver cards expire every 5 years. You can apply to renew your digital tachograph driver card up to 28 days and no fewer than 15 days before your current card expires.

To be eligible for a renewal, you must:

  • Have a valid Irish tachograph card
  • Have a valid Irish or EU driving licence with a bus or truck category
  • Be a resident of Ireland with a PPS number

Fee

A digital tachograph card for a driver costs:

  • €45 if you apply online, or
  • €60 if you apply by post.

OPTION 1: Apply Online

    Take your new photo to any Garda station to be witnessed, and then send it with a printout of your application form to the RSA.

OPTION 2: Apply by Post

OPTION 3: Apply in person

You can apply for a driver card at our public office, where your documents will be checked on the spot. You must bring your:

  • Completed application form (PDF)
  • Original driver licence
  • ID document (passport or birth certificate)
  • Passport photograph
  • EU licence holders must also bring proof of residence (a photocopy of a bank statement, utility bill or PPSN letter issued from Dept of Social Protection, no more than 3 months old, are the only residency proofs acceptable)
