Regulation of Written-Off Vehicles - consulation launched

The Department of Transport and the Road Safety Authority (RSA) has launched a public consultation process seeking the views of all interested parties on proposals to regulate written-off vehicles in Ireland.

In 2008 an administrative system was put in place in Ireland for dealing with written-off vehicles.  As the effective regulation of a written-off vehicle is important to the safety of all road users consideration is now being given to strengthening the current system through the introduction of a legislative framework for managing written off vehicles.

The consultation document “Regulating Written-off Vehicles” sets out Ireland’s current policy and considers best practice internationally and seeks the input of stakeholders on regulation, classification and safety issues associated with written-off vehicles.

The outcome of the consultation will be considered in finalising recommendations to the Minister for Transport on this important issue.

The consultative process lasts until Friday 4 February 2011.
