Pedestrians, Cyclists & Motorcyclists Warned of Dangers of Melting Snow & Ice

As a general thaw sets in across the country the Road Safety Authority (RSA) is today Friday 10th December 2010, advising pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists that they face hazardous road conditions as a result of melting snow and ice.

Mr. Noel Brett, CEO, RSA, reminded pedestrians that “many footpaths are still icy so walk with extreme care, make sure you are wearing appropriate footwear and consider an appropriate walking stick or walking pole. Avoid walking in the streets at all costs. Remember, cars and trucks slip and slide, too!  If it’s an emergency, and you can’t avoid the street, wear bright or reflective clothing.”

“If possible try to walk on footpaths that are exposed to the sun, rather than those which are shaded by tall buildings or trees, as these will tend to clear of ice and snow first.” said Mr. Brett.

The RSA is also advising road users, especially pedestrian’s and cyclists to be aware of overhead hazards. Melting snow and ice falling from buildings and trees pose a serious risk. Be aware of what’s happening above you and stay clear from the edges of buildings.

Road surfaces may be damaged after the freeze / thaw action of freezing temperatures and ice. Motorists, especially cyclists and motorcyclists are advised to watch carefully for such hazards.

Motorists are asked to allow extra distance when passing cyclists and motorcyclists as they may have to take evasive action to avoid a hazard such as a build up of slush, black ice or a pot-hole.

Mr. Brett, concluded by reminding road users that while “A thaw may have cleared snow from roads, they faced added dangers from wet or flooded roads or indeed black ice which may be lingering in patches on sheltered roads.”

The RSA has prepared a helpful guide ‘Severe Weather Advice for Road Users’ which you can download from the RSA’s website which has useful advice on dealing with the difficult road conditions in all kinds of severe weather.
