RSA Urges Drivers to Slow Down Following Reports of ‘Black Ice’ On Roads

The Road Safety Authority (RSA) has issued a public appeal, today Sunday 5th December, for drivers to slow down as driving conditions across the country remain treacherous, due to ice and black ice on roads. Mr. Noel Brett, CEO, Road Safety Authority said,

“The current conditions are the most dangerous to date because they can catch us off guard. A thaw may have cleared snow from some roads, in fact they may look safe to drive normally but they are still lethal. So don’t get lulled into a false sense of security, we are still experiencing freezing temperatures and roads remain icy and extremely dangerous.” Mr. Brett added,

“I would appeal to all drivers, particularly truck drivers and especially those driving to work or bringing the children to school tomorrow Monday, to slow down and keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front. This is especially important on high speed roads like motorways and dual carriageways. If possible use public transport and only drive if it’s essential.” “Watch out for black ice. If the road looks polished or glossy it could be, "black ice” and it’s difficult to see. It is nearly transparent ice that often looks like a harmless puddle or is overlooked entirely. Watch out for black ice, especially in sheltered / shaded areas on roads, under trees and adjacent to high walls.” He said.

Mr. Brett also had a message for pedestrians, “Avoid walking in the streets as, cars and trucks slip and slide, too! Walk with extreme care, make sure you are wearing appropriate footwear and wear bright or reflective clothing, consider using a walking stick or walking pole.” “I would urge all road users to heed local weather and traffic reports, be extremely careful and heed any Garda messages in relation to travel.”
