Road Safety Interactive Shuttle at This Years BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition

The Road Safety Authority (RSA) is inviting students to visit their action packed, road safety interactive shuttle at this year’s BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition which is taking place at the RDS from Wednesday 13th to Saturday 16th January 2010.

The ‘Road Safety Interactive Shuttle’ will play an integral role in increasing and developing road safety awareness at local and national level. When visiting the shuttle you can expect to see the following:

  • A fully interactive, educational road safety experience
  • A fully equipped presentation area, with lectern, projector, screen and seating for an audience of 25 people
  • A driving simulator enclosed in a specially designed pod
  • A motorbike simulator and a bike simulator
  • Reaction timers- a device which records your reaction time when stopping a vehicle and the distance it takes
  • The Driver Theory Test Challenge – there will be six computers available where students can test their knowledge of the complete driver theory test, questionnaires, interactive games, RSA website
  • Exhibition areas to promote ‘themed’ road safety issues
  • 2 Plasma screens showing a series of road safety advertisements and road safety programming
  • A Garda motorbike 
  • XBOX Competition - Students will be in with a chance to win an XBOX 360 each day by taking part in a quiz which relates to all activities in the shuttle 
  • High visibility back packs, reflective armbands and strips will be distributed FREE! to students along with RSA pens, badges and DVDs. 
  • Members of the RSA staff will be available to offer advice and information on any road safety issues

The RSA will also be presenting a special award at the exhibition. This project award will go to any entry to the BT Young Scientists Exhibition in any category that covers a road safety topic or related topic. This invention or initiative must be thoroughly researched and have the potential to reduce Irish road fatalities or injuries.

The award will be presented to the winning project at the prize giving ceremony on Friday 15th January at 5:30pm. The ceremony will be hosted by TV presenter Aidan Power and Aoibhinn Ní Shuilleabhain the RSA Special Award will be presented by Michael Brosnan, Research Manager, RSA.

Mr. Brosnan said: “the BT Young Scientist Exhibition is an excellent opportunity to actively involve students in road safety issues. They are the future road users so by carrying out research and working together on projects they are not only educating themselves but also developing potential innovative solutions to reduce death and injury on Irish roads. In addition, the RSA stand at this year’s exhibition is the most interactive and engaging yet so we are looking forward to a fun filled, action packed few days”.

The RSA Road Safety Interactive Shuttle is located at the back exit of the RDS on Anglesea road.
