Launch Of Online Application System For Digital Tachograph Driver Cards
On 1 December 2011, the Road Safety Authority will launch an online application system which will allow truck and bus drivers (HGV and PSV drivers) to apply online for digital tachograph driver cards.
The online system will allow drivers to apply quickly and easily for a digital tachograph driver card:
24 hours a day, 7 days a week
- at a reduced rate of €45 (paper applications will be charged at €60)
- with a faster turnaround time; and
- track the application’s progress each day.
The online application system can be used for a first time application and for renewing and replacing a card.
With the deadline for many renewals approaching, the number of driver card applications is anticipated to double in 2012. The launch of the online application system is an important step in the RSA’s ongoing efforts to improve customer service for drivers applying for driver cards and improving our efficiency and effectiveness. The online system offers drivers the opportunity of a reduction in costs as well as good public service.

Notes for Editors
What is a digital tachograph driver card?
A digital tachograph driver card is a personal smart card for digital tachographs on which all relevant driver data required for EU social regulations (driving and rest times) is stored on digital driver card software. The digital driver card remains in the driver’s possession and can be used with all approved digital tachographs.
Who can apply for a digital tachographs driver card?
All drivers who drive goods vehicles over 3.5 tonnes and bus vehicles used for carrying more than 9 persons including the driver and who are subject to Regulation (EC) No. 561/2006 may apply for a digital tachograph driver card. The Road Safety Authority is responsible for the administration of digital tachographs cards on behalf of the State.
Does the digital tachographs replace the driving licence?
No, driving licences and digital tachograph driver cards are separate documents.
What is a digital tachograph?
A digital tachograph is an electronic system for recording driving and rest times for drivers and co-drivers of commercial vehicles. Vehicle speed, distance travelled and other system-related parameters are also logged. Data is stored in a memory (mass memory) inside the onboard tachograph system and on driver-specific smart cards (driver cards). The legal basis for this is Regulation (EC) No. 2135/98 and No. 1360/2002.
Since May of 2006, all new HGVs of more than 3.5 tonnes and passenger vehicles used for carrying more than 9 passengers including the driver must be equipped with a digital tachograph, in accordance with Regulation (EC) No. 561 / 2006.
What is the current fee ?
The current fee for digital tachographs cards is €50. From 1 December applications for driver cards received via the online system will be charged at €45; paper applications will be charged at €60.
