Statement regarding RTE’s Prime Time Investigates Programme 16th May 2011 On the RTE 1 Prime Time Investigates television programme, broadcast on Monday 16th May, certain allegations were made regarding the National Car Test (NCT) and specifically the roadworthiness testing of vehicles being used as taxis.
Applus Car Testing Service Ltd operates the National Car Testing Service (NCTS) in Ireland under a contract for the RSA. Applus is required to adhere to a number of performance standards under its contract with the RSA.
The RSA takes very seriously allegations of misconduct relating to any aspect of the service and will ensure that, a full investigation takes place in relation to the issues raised in this case. The RSA has instructed the contractor to immediately investigate this mater fully.
The RSA is also in discussions with PwC and AA Ireland who supervise the National Car Testing Service. As soon as the RSA became aware of these allegations we requested full details of the claims from RTE.
When this information is received it will be forwarded to An Garda Síochána for investigation. In Ireland, we have a car testing system in place that carries out over 1 million tests each year.
The RSA will not tolerate fraudulent behaviour or poor quality service. The RSA is not in a position to comment any further on this specific allegation pending the outcome of a criminal investigation.
