A welcome from Gay Byrne

The Road Safety Authority (RSA) is a hugely significant part of the drive to create a safety culture on our roads. Needless death and injury takes place practically every day of the year. Much of this is avoidable, and our job is to bring about a substantial improvement in road safety.

We know from experience and the evidence coming from other countries that road users have a right to expect safer roads. Of course they have obligations too, and the consistent message is that a few simple behavioural changes could save many lives and prevent unnecessary suffering. Changes like:

  • A reduction of speed by just 5km
  • Always wearing your seatbelt

The objective of the RSA, on its own and through its work with the Gardai and other stakeholders, is to bring Ireland into line with countries that have the highest standards of road safety.

Changing our behaviour and creating a new culture takes time, but we have already changed in many ways. I am confident that change will happen, and that our aim of matching global leaders in road safety is achievable.

Since joining the RSA as chairperson, I have been heartened by the many messages of goodwill. Harnessing this goodwill will go some way towards establishing a safety culture in Ireland. My personal commitment is to devote the necessary time and energy to help the RSA achieve its objectives.
