As thousands of primary schoolchildren around the country prepare for the end of the school year and the beginning of their summer holidays, the Road Safety Authority (RSA) is reminding road-users to be on the lookout for children when using the roads.

A new report published by the European Transport Safety Council (ETSC) in Brussels today Tuesday 21st June 2011 shows that Ireland has made remarkable road safety progress over the last decade and is now the sixth safest country out of 27 EU Member states.

307 road users were killed in road collisions in the county of Donegal over the period 1996-2009. Donegal also accounted for 6% of all road deaths in Ireland despite making up only 3.5% of the Irish population (1996-2006 censuses).

Can the Irish Public meet the challenge of not one road death; not one serious injury this June Bank Holiday Weekend? As we head into the bank holiday weekend with twelve fewer fatalities on our roads than this day last year we plead with all road users to play their part in ensuring that not one life is lost this holiday weekend and that not one life is shattered by serious injury on our roads.

The Road Safety Authority (RSA) has welcomed the granting of new powers, by the Minster for Transport, Tourism & Sport Mr. Leo Varadkar, to An Garda Síochána, to test drivers for the presence of alcohol at the scene of road traffic collisions.
