What is the situation in other EU Countries?

The UK (0.08)* and Malta (0.09) are the only other EU countries with a higher drink drive level of BAC compared to Ireland. All other countries, including Ireland, have a limit of .05 or lower. In addition, other countries have lower BAC levels for learner and novice drivers and for commercial drivers, such is the case in Ireland.

* In December 2008, the Scottish Parliament voted in favour of reducing the drink drive limit from 0.08 to 0.05. Northern Ireland is concluding a public consultation process outlining options regarding a possible reduction in their drink drive limit (0.08).

The European Transport Safety Council (ETSC) has produced a policy paper on drink-driving in commercial transport, published in February 2010. The paper gives an overview of how drink-driving could be effectively tackled in commercial transport through various regulations and initiatives. It illustrates how alcohol is affecting driving skills and its effect on crash rates. Moreover, against the background of their alcohol policies, it shows how successful a number of countries are in tackling drink-driving.
