Stricter proof of insurance rules for the driving test
You must prove you're insured to drive the vehicle used for the test.
We accept the following documentation as proof:
- A valid certificate of motor insurance naming you as a driver of that vehicle (see examples below). This can be an original or a copy of the original and digital versions are acceptable.
- If you're not named on the certificate, you must bring the cert itself and an email or letter on headed paper from your insurance company, stating that you're insured to drive that vehicle (see example below).
Names or personal details of other people can be redacted or covered. The documents will be viewed by the driving tester and returned to you.

Please refer to page 7 of the Checklist for your driving test for more information.
Your motor insurance disc must:
- Be properly displayed on the vehicle you are using for your driving test.
- Be a valid, original insurance disc (white background with a green band along the left-hand side*).
- Clearly show the registration number (or fleet name) of your vehicle, the policy dates and any other information required by law. If details are faded (including the green strip), you should get the disc replaced prior to your driving test.
The driver tester will ask you to read and sign a statement confirming that your vehicle is roadworthy and that the insurance cover is in place and adequate.
*According to the regulations (SI 355/1984 – Road Traffic (Insurance disc) Regulations, 1984 paragraph 4(2), 'Every insurance disc shall be of paper with a white background and with a green band not less that 8mm wide and not more that 12mm wide extending along the left-hand side'.
