RSA Joins Forces with An Garda Síochána, County Councils, Emergency Services & Victim Support Groups to Mark World Day of Remembrance

World day of Remembrance 13.11.2023

The Road Safety Authority (RSA) is this week joining forces with members of An Garda Síochána, local county councils, emergency services and victim support groups to mark World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims.

Those who have died on our roads will be remembered at a series of services that will be held around the country.

In 2005, the United Nations adopted a resolution calling for governments to mark the third Sunday in November each year as World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims. This day provides an opportunity to draw the public’s attention to road traffic crashes, their consequences and costs, and the measures which can be taken to prevent them. The day also provides an opportunity to remind governments and society of their responsibility to make roads safer.

Liz O’Donnell, chairperson of the RSA, said: “Now is an important time to reflect on what has been a very difficult year. Too many families have been devastated by road trauma and the loss or serious injury to a loved one.

“As we look to 2024, we in the RSA are determined to reverse the upward trend in road crashes. We have made great progress in road safety in the past and we can do it again if we all commit to it by being aware and vigilant and taking responsibility for the safety of other road users.“

In the capital, Dublin City Council is hosting a memorial event for World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims and their families on Wednesday, November 15 at 3pm in the Atrium of the Civic Offices, Dublin. The Dublin Lord Major will open the event and the Choir from Christ Church Cathedral will be performing. All are welcome to attend.

On Friday November 17, President Michael D Higgins is hosting a private reception at Áras an Uachtaráin to mark World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims.

On Sunday November 19, Mayo County Council is hosting a mass in Knock at 12pm on 19 November 19. In Louth a remembrance service will take place in the Augustinian Church, Drogheda at 1.15pm.

A special memorial mass for World Day of Remembrance is taking place in St Mary's Church Listowel Co Kerry at 9am. A remembrance Mass will be held in Remembrance of our loved ones in St Munchin's Church, Clancy Strand, Limerick at 11.30am.

In Cork a special memorial mass will take place in the Cathedral of St Mary and St Anne, Roman Street (Shandon), Cork City at 11.30am. Also in Westmeath, a remembrance service takes place in Bloomfield House Hotel, Mullingar at 1pm.
