Driving test waiting times

Due to Covid-19 restrictions we can only test essential workers at this time.

When will I get a test appointment?

During level 5 Covid-19 restrictions, we can only offer test appointments to essential workers. Know more >

For anyone else on the waiting list, there is no need to contact us. As we move through Covid-19 restrictions based on Government advice, we will be contacting you directly to invite you to book a driving test.

Please note that our customer service agents cannot book tests over the phone or offer any updates on waiting times so, we kindly ask that you do not telephone our call centre for this information.

Waiting times

Covid-19 has caused a large backlog of customers waiting for a driving test and unfortunately this means it may be some time before we can offer you an appointment.

We are currently developing an online tool which estimates when you can expect to be invited to book a test. We plan to have this ready by the end of April 2021.

Appointments will be prioritised based on eligibility and application date

Once the testing restrictions have been eased, we will be able to start inviting more candidates from the waiting list to book a test.

Appointment slots will be offered based on the following order of criteria:

    1. Covid-19 cancellations – anyone who was due to take a test recently but had to cancel due to Covid-19 restrictions will be given priority.
    2. Eligibility – you must be qualified to take the test. You cannot sit the test until you have completed all of your driver training (e.g., EDT for cars or IBT for motorbikes) and held your first learner permit for at least 6 months.
    3. Application date – the earlier you applied, the sooner you will get an invitation to book a test.

I had to cancel my test because of Covid-19 restrictions. Will I lose my place in the queue?

No. If you had to cancel your test due to Covid-19 symptoms or because you are not an essential worker, don’t worry, you have been placed on a priority list and your fee has been saved.

What are you doing to reduce the waiting times?

We are taking steps to increase the number of driving tests we can deliver. We have opened new test centres in the past year and are currently hiring additional driver testers. This will help to reduce the backlog and shorten waiting times. In the meantime, thank you for your patience and understanding.

What do I need to do next?

If you have already applied for a driving test and are on the waiting list, you don’t need to do anything. We will contact you directly when appointment slots become available. At that point you will be invited to book a test.

If you have not yet applied for a test, please sign up or log into our customer portal MyRoadSafety.ie If it’s your first time registering, you will need to choose a vehicle category (e.g., car, tractor, bus etc.) under ‘My Goals’ before you can book a test or add yourself to the waiting list.
