A reduced Essential Driver Training (EDT) programme including exemption to the 6 month waiting period rule is available for foreign licence holders who can't exchange their driving licence in Ireland. It involves taking 6 driving lessons instead of the usual 12 and you don't have to wait 6 months to sit a driving test.
How do I qualify?
If you have held your full foreign driving licence for at least two years and it has not expired more than 6 months ago you may get the reduced EDT programme and six month rule exemption.
If you have held your full foreign driving licence for at least six months but less than 2 years and it has not expired more than 6 months ago you may get the six month rule exemption only.
For more information on the qualification rules and application documentation needed please read our Reduced EDT leaflet and download our Application form for Reduced EDT and/or exemption from the 6 month rule.
