Research by the Road Safety Authority (RSA) has revealed that between 2017 and 2020, for every one road death recorded there were nine serious injuries on Irish roads. The research was presented at the RSA’s Annual Academic Lecture online today, which centred on the topic of serious injuries.

An Garda Síochána’s Christmas and New Year Road Safety Campaign for 2021 commenced on Friday 26th November and concluded on Tuesday 4th January 2022. The campaign primarily focussed on Mandatory Intoxicant Testing i.e. detecting those who drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs. The campaign also focused on speeding, non-wearing of seatbelts, mobile phone use by drivers, in addition to checking on unaccompanied drivers driving on learner permits.

The Road Safety Authority (RSA) and the Department of Transport have agreed to allow a temporary and urgent derogation in respect of certain provisions of the EU driving and resting time rules. The proposed derogation will apply to all operators and drivers subject to the EU driver’s hours and tachograph rules engaged in the carriage of goods.

The Road Safety Authority (RSA) and the Gaelic Players Association (GPA) are calling on all motorists to prioritise their performance behind the wheel and never ever drink and drive. The advice comes as the RSA and the GPA are launching a new campaign to drive awareness of maintaining absolute focus behind the wheel, with the warning that even one drink can impair performance on the roads.

Met Eireann has issued a status RED warning for Kerry and Cork for southwesterly winds later veering northwesterly that will reach mean speeds in excess of 80 km/h with severe or damaging gusts in excess of 130km/h. Due to a combination of high waves, storm surge and high tide, coastal flooding is expected. Disruption to power and travel are likely. The Road Safety Authority (RSA) is advising road users in areas affected by the RED warning to avoid any travel during the storm window. The RED Warning is in place from 6am Tuesday 7 December until 9pm Tuesday 7 December.
